UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic Site of Canada

RideauThe Town of Smiths Falls welcomes you to the Heart of the Rideau Canal waterway, Ontario’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rideau Canal is the best preserved slack water canal in the world, and the only one from the great 19th century canal building era that still operates along its original watercourse, with its original structures intact. This engineering marvel and its fortifications, built at Kingston to protect it, illustrate a globally important stage in human history – the clash for control of British North America.
